They're only tally marks if you have never seen them before. His current count is 8. What he is probably doing is counting how many enemies he has killed either with his handgun or all together or maybe something special.

If you have not noticed, there was a hidden story being told in the nazi zombie game modes in WaW. If you havent bothered looking at all the easter eggs in the maps for zombies and googled them to see what they meant then you wouldnt know the hidden story.

Here is a link explaining the hidden story. As you read it you will noticed this happened during WWII so it fits with the game.

If you people are so desperate for zombies just play WaW. TreyArch doesnt want to be known just for zombies so they are making something NEW that they hope people will love just as much if not more.
