When you're making a game like Black Ops, two elements are very important; Realism and fun gameplay. So what did Treyarch do to make the perfect mix between the two?

Black Ops will be set in the Cold War, from the 1960's to well into the 80's, maybe even 90's. Now that many confidential documents have been declassified, Treyarch jumped on the story of S.O.G. A group of elite men that fought a deniable and covert war behind enemy lines without having the Government officially involved. Now that alone is reason enough to make a game out of it, right? That's exactly what Treyarch thought, so they pulled some strings and ended up talking to the men that were actually doing missions on which the game will be based on.

One of the sources which name has been spoken more than a few times, is Major John L. Plaster. He is a decorated Vietnam War veteran who actually served in SOG (or in full: Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group) between 1968 and 1971, running 22 missions behind enemy lines.

He has written a number of fast-paced books about this period of time, plus a trainings VHS/DVD with the subject of sharpshooting which he has teached to police and military personnel for many years. If you feel like reading into some of the historical missions that surrounded the Cold War, we advise you one of these books (all by Major John Plaster). Sonny Puzikas

In an interview by the You must login or register to view this content. with Mark Lamia (studio head) and Josh Olin (community manager) they talked about how the Artificial Intelligence will be heavily based on genuine black ops tactics. Earlier they revealed that the same technique as in the blockbuster movie Avatar will be used to mocap, or motion capture, the movement of players. One of the persons that were mocapped, is Sonny Puzikas, a former operative in Spetsnaz, the Russian equivalent of SOG. "They were trainined in how to be lethal without weapons," says Mark Lamia.

"From day one they were being shot at by their supervisors to desensitize them. That's the sort of mindset they were in," interrupts Olin, gleefully. "Sonny came in to give us a presentation, and it started off as a briefing, but then it quickly became, 'how many ways can Sonny kill you?'. He showed us some crazy techniques; we just watched and thought, 'that's awesome, and we put them in the game!" Later on, Treyarch was able to mocap some of Sonny's moves. "His AI type will be very hard to play against in the game, it's very dynamic, very agile," says Lamia. Naturally, each force will have different combat styles then, the Spetnaz with their deadly melee techniques, the Viet Cong with their jungle-based guerrilla tactics. [..]

Having someone like Major John Plaster and Sonny Puzikas as inspiration is great, but Lt. Col. Hank Keirsey is a very valuable source too. He has been consulted by Treyarch since as early as 2003, when Treyarch started development at Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. He's a military adviser that can tell a lot about everything Treyarch needs to know about making games in the military genre; How soldiers move, how they talk, what tactics they use, and what type of weapons or equipment they use, how to call in indirect artillery fire, and much more. That's the type of thing he can talk about for hours.

At first Lt. Col. Keirsey was not a big fan of video games, but all that changed when he saw how dedicated Treyarch was at making the games. He's glad to be a part of it and being able to help make the game as authentic as possible (while keeping it fun to play, of course). Oh yeah, he also challenges you to complete this game on Veteran Winky Winky You must login or register to view this content.
