What the big theory is is that NOVA6 is a reference to GKNOVA6. The nova6 gas must be the experimental gas that was found. What might have been is there was 5 nova gases before that but failed, and now there is NOVA6 gas which has started the whole zombie thing. So what is basically being said is that maybe the gas was being thrown by soviets, and now you are trying to get out of the gas before you become a zombie.

Just a bump here, but this is some better explaination on it.
SPOILER ALERT!
You achieve this in the last campaign mission. You need to go to Rebirth Island. Rebirth Island is a place where NOVA6 gets saved. A plane crashed in the jungle of Rebirth Island having all the NOVA6 gas being leaked. Then your mission is to kill the Soviets and voilá, campaign done, plus you unlock the last zombie map.
