With CFW we were able to run homebrew and backups, on 3.55 Firmware and we were able to maintain online play, the homebrew was great, but unfortunately with every great hack etc.
There is a bad side, this bad side was the Call of Duty: Black Ops cheaters, they miss used a homebrew filemanager to install a patch.
In order to create lobbies and cheat at the game, ruining the experience for honest legit players, several websites have reported on this ban, so finding the original source was kinda hard, here is a quote from the possible original Source(You must login or register to view this content.)

BlOps hackers are getting hit hardest with a permanent CoD console server ban – many of them have expressed their “innocence” on the Official Ps3 Cod: Black Ops Forums.It’s not limited to just a few. In fact, there are dozens of threads about this topic. Here are just a few of their posts:
