Call of Duty: Black Ops community manager Josh Olin has told NowGamer that most YouTube videos of hacked Black Ops servers are offline mods that don't work online

Call of Duty: Black Ops has suffered criticism from fans over alleged susceptibility to hacks and mods, with YouTube videos showing modded servers running the game.

"There’s always lessons to be learned," Olin said in an interview with NowGamer. "When you’re talking about online security and the hacking community, they’re always really clever and will find ways to break the game that we won’t have thought of."

“There's been really no big breach of security”

The community manager said that fixing problems was at the forefront of the dev team's thoughts. "Our number one priority was a system whereby we could quickly identify breach of securities, enforce them and then catch them. We work closely with the first-parties to push our title updates through, if full patches are needed, and we even have a dedicated Black Ops team that monitors the online health of the game."

Olin added that video upload sites help exaggerate the issue.
"If you take a look at Black Ops as an example, there are YouTube videos galore of hackers and modders who claim there are prestige lobbies and challenge lobbies and all sorts of terminologies that they use to scare people.

"Most of those are just that, they’re scare tactics. People think ‘Oh a YouTube video has 10,000 hits so there must be 10,000 hackers’, but it’s just a YouTube video they’re spreading around. The point is the proprietor of the video a lot of times made an offline hack, a hack that couldn’t be brought online. Our security, if you bring the hack online, detects the hacks instantaneously and either gets an instant perma-ban or we take a look at it."

Contrary to popular belief, the game hasn't suffered any massive security problems. "With Black Ops, there’s been really no big breach of security," said Olin. "Anybody who has hacked or ranked up in a modded lobby, the very few that come online get banned and whatever exploit they’re using gets quickly patched."

We've asked Activision how many Black Ops players have been banned so far, and are still awaiting reply.
