Are you sure your not confusing which is which?.
So your "router" that your speaking of does it have more then one ethernet plug port or is it just simple cable cord with ethernet output for internet service? I'll try and help explain this cause im still confused myself.
You said you have 1 square box("in ur words its ur router") that your cable cord goes to from the wall outlet? That box sounds like it is your modem aka cable modem. Should have cable cord plugged into it with an ethernet cord from there going to your ps3. If thats correct to what you said you had.
But you mentioned living with ur parents so im thinking they have a cpu which would mean 1 or 2 things. One, you should have a router allowing your cable service to have mutliple IP's subbed from your service provided IP allowing more then one access at a time. Two, your cable package from your provider is wifi setup and your cable modem itself allows wifi connections which could be how their pc's connect..
Im not a lagswitch expert but, I have had my switch connected as modem-router-lagswitch-ps3 and it worked after configured network settings on ps3. But i changed setup to modem-lagswitch-router-ethernet cord-ps3. I extended the switch wires from ethernet cord with other wire allowing it to reach me. This is much better then my first setup and allows much more time. I would say to me it feels like this setup allows more control without being kicked.
If your setup is only modem-lagswitch-ps3, I'm not sure that works. I have read it doesnt but idk for sure. Check out your "router"/modem and tell more about what ur setup is and maybe can help more
. lol hope that helped .
