Yeah, you have to get a ethernet cord, plug it in to the modem and into your ps3, and then you plug the lag switch in modem to modem. So that way the switch is not directly into the ps3, its in the modem sockets. But make sure you are the host.

A modem built into most routers you know..........
Your need to get the amount of lag just right and be host for it to work the best.

Modem
Router
2 ethernet cords (OR JUST 1) 1 normal 1 with Lag Switch
PS3

The cable with Lag Switch goes Between the Modem & Router NOT Modem & PS3

Then the other Cable goes to the PS3 Done.

2 If the PS3 Is next to the Modem & Router Wired Lag Switch

1 if the PS3 is far from the PS3 (Wireless Lag Switch )

i dont have a modem tho
