Modern Warfare 2 isn’t all apocalyptic deluge and end of world madness. Yes, the story hustles you from one extravagant set piece to the next on a gasoline-tinged blast of spectaculosity. But there are plenty of tiny details to discover if you hang back and poke around the nooks and corners instead of dashing from checkpoint to checkpoint. The developers have dropped many sly nudges and winks for those who take the time to explore their creation. Here are a few of our favorites so far.
Dramatic chickens

Aside from traffic and civilians, you’ll also encounter caged chickens in the favela. When you ruthlessly murder the helpless poultry, watch closely and you’ll see them perform a dramatic death animation that’s more Looney Tunes than Black Hawk Down. Perhaps this Easter egg is meant for PETA, who had a problem with the dog killing in World at War.
Departures – Delayed

Above: The least of our worries
In the controversial airport massacre scene, while wading through a mess of bullet-riddled vacationers, the flight times all suddenly flip over to “delayed.” It’s darkly humorous to think that in the midst of this horrifying bloodbath, some anal retentive desk-jockey wouldn’t flee for his life until he’d properly updated the signage. Now that’s putting the customer experience first. You’re looking at Employee of the Month right there.
Blow up doll in Makarov’s safehouse

Just think of all those haggard, lonely men, holed away in a remote mountain cabin guarding Makarov’s precious intel with no way to gratify their baser urges. But Makarov knows how to take care of his hired goons - he’s provided a deluxe novelty sex doll for them to pass around in their off-duty hours. When was the last time your boss was so considerate?
Standard Hotel rooftop bar

Above: Swanky! And yes, those tanks explode
Call us jet set hipster trash if you must, but we immediately recognized this perfect recreation of the rooftop bar at The Standard, a trendy hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Not pictured: flavor of the minute DJs, overpriced drinks, skeezy gold diggers.
Reading material

Was it overly callous of us to do some duty-free shopping while Makarov and his thugs did their dirty work? One thing we noticed was the fine selection of magazines on offer in the airport shops. When the tides of war brought us back to the USA, we couldn’t help but notice that the Nova gas station had most of the same titles on display (with translated titles, naturally.) And you thought print was a dead medium!

Graffiti

Modern Warfare 2’s streets and alleys are tagged up with loads of cool graffiti, including this Infinity Ward logo, rad South American band posters and Warhol-esque pop street art.
Soap gives Price back his pistol

Above: This one’s for shooting, this one’s for fun
Who could forget the motion-blurred (or were those tears?) climax of Call of Duty 4, when the critically wounded Captain Price chucked his pistol over to Soap for a final desperate shot at Zakhaev? Upon rescuing Price from a Russian gulag in MW2, Soap nonchalantly hands the pistol back to him and says, “This belongs to you.” Before the lads can get all weepy about it, the poignancy of the scene is interrupted by explosions and shit, followed by a frantic near-death escape that would make Michael Bay soil his pants. Though Soap and Price never spoke of it again, neither man would forget that moment to their dying day.

Robert Bowling cameo

You’ve probably heard of Robert Bowling, aka @fourzerotwo: he’s the public face of Modern Warfare 2 on the internets. During one of our sessions with Infinity Ward, Robert let us in on a fun little insider fact – that’s his voice screaming advice at you during the training exercise in the pit. But don’t get the wrong idea: in person he’s a really nice guy.
Sniper roost on Highrise

Here’s another gem we gleaned from our time with Infinity Ward. Robert showed us a cleverly hidden sniper roost on the Highrise map. Aside from being a choice spot for racking up killstreaks, the area is littered with IW’s trademark teddy bears and a bunch of empty water bottles (presumably left behind by all the sniping little bitches who’ve been camping up there.) This spot was made for Tactical Insertion!
Get the hint?

Above: Effing noob
In the opening mission, Team Player, you’re to man a mounted turret as your convoy crosses a bridge into town. If you try to run ahead of the convoy on foot, sniper fire quickly cuts you down. The death screen, usually reserved for appalling factoids or pithy war-related insights from famous men, instead quips “It would be safer to ride in the convoy.” You got served.
Fiery hoses

Above: Somebody call MythBusters
If you blow up the pumps at the Nova gas station, the pump handles writhe and spout flames in every direction. This probably doesn’t count as an according-to-Hoyle Easter egg, but it was cool enough that we took a break from defending the homeland to set part of it on fire.
Get a grip, Private Hudson!

After Price detonates an EMP over Washington, D.C., the US ground forces are shocked and awed. One frazzled soldier loses his shit in a manner immediately reminiscent of Private Hudson in the film Aliens, as portrayed in this video. Where’s Sigourney Weaver when you need her? Unfortunately, Modern Warfare is a total sausagefest.
Porter Justice movie poster

In a dark back alley of the Hornet’s Nest mission, we discovered a teddy bear (a running gag at Infinity Ward, you’ll find them scattered as set dressing throughout MW2) alongside a crayon drawing and a movie poster for Porter Justice. You probably don’t remember it, but this same poster hangs next to the SAS shooting range at the beginning of Call of Duty 4.
Exploding watermelons

Another shout back to Call of Duty 4, the exploding watermelons return in Modern Warfare 2. While other fruit appears throughout the game (see mangoes, above), the watermelons are the only ones that burst on impact.
