also i have noticed that the cable has 5 plugs on it for the tv side are all 5 needed? ie red yellow white component whats the other 2?

you just need 2 cables. Each cable has 5 connections though.

You will just need to buy one that can connect to the PS3 to your HDPVR. The 2 sidded component cable will be included with the Hauppauge when you buy it.

Also recording in 1080p will eat up your computer with a lot of Memory, so I would recommend you just stick to recording with 720p, it's the same quality and you can hardly tell the difference.
