If you’re curious how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would feel as a two-dimensional platform shooter, you’d better download “Call of Duty 6” before Activision’s lawyers put the kibosh on it, as they are wanting to do.
This free little mouse-and-keyboard affair has you blasting baddies in Afghanistan, jumping over icy cliffs in Russia and replicating Modern Warfare 2’s vehicle chases from a top-down perspective. It’s basically Contra with a targeting reticle and an orchestral score, which is to say it’s basically Modern Warfare 2 without the glossy production. Even the frustrating trial and error gameplay doesn’t suffer when you take away the third dimension.
Call of Duty 6 was created in Game Maker by Callum Foot, and should take about 5 minutes to complete. There’s no multiplayer. But just a word of caution: The game, and its trailer, include plot spoilers for the actual Modern Warfare 2 — as if you were paying attention anyway — albeit in minimalist form.
