It might have something to do with a direct impact with an AC130 shot or a Predator missile, like someone before me said. This would explain why there was a gun there, since it was direct impact. I'm not sure how you would replicate this though

heres my 2 cents.

An ac130 hit where the guy was and the magnum dropped. The lag left the smoky residue but the smoke texture wasn't there due to lag.
