Using a riot shield as part of a team can be very effective for your team, especially in games such as capture the flag when you lure the defenders into engaging you, giving away their position, Demolition you make a very good distraction, or even to spearhead and attack. I recommend keeping riot shields inside the objective game modes as you get low amounts of kills but you are a valuable asset to your team if you get it to work.
The riot shielder’s set up:
Riot shield (no Sh*T Sherlock)
The secondary is down to the user, BUT I recommend a machine pistol as you will only ever need to use this if you become isolated from your team. The machine pistol can give you support over a short-medium range depending on your ability. My personal favourite is the M93 Rafficia due to its three round burst and stability; slap a red dot sight on it and you can fight medium range with ease.
Equipment: Blast shield <- that puppy will save your life, if someone sticks Semtex to your shield, so long as your blast shield is on you will survive... Just. Explosives are a weakness of the riot shield, a blast shield helps GREATLY. Remember, you’re in a team, the throwing knife is useless. Your job isn’t to get kills.
Special Grenade: Stuns or Flash bangs, Useful before entering a CQB situation, your support should have these also but you still need them.
Perk one: I recommend Scavenger so you can keep those stuns going, which gives you an advantage in a firefight.
*But doooodeeee why don’t you use marathon* When you sprint you expose your body, you don’t need to do that much sprinting, if you sprint in combat you are most likely to be killed. However that is my preference, again it is down to the user which perks they use.
Perk two:
Lightweight with a riot shield you need to be on your toes and able to move to block an incoming storm of bullets
Perk three: This perk slot isn’t overly helpful to the riot shielder, *but dooooodeeee what about commando* You’re working in a team, you don’t need to get into a melee fight, but they happen so commando is my recommendation
Your Support
You need back up, one guy is all I recommend, unless you’re spearheading the attack then I recommend having two guys to back you up.
They need to have weaponry they are comfortable at getting medium/close range kills with at a decent speed. The trusty M4A1/Tar-21 are my personal favourites, the UMP silenced works well, but it’s down to personal preference.
However avoid light machine guns as their longer reload time will slow down your attack and put the riot shielder into a vulnerable position. Perks are really down to the user, but make sure their sensible and make sense in your role.
The Common Encounters
When you see an enemy with your riot shield equipped they (normally) have one of four reactions:
1) They spray at the shield
2) Look for a gap and try to hit it
3) Explosives
4) Rush into a melee situation
How to react to 1)
This is too easy. Point your shield at them keep your feet covered, get your support to pick them off, no trouble as they’re fixated on you.
2) Same as 1) only be extra careful, keep all cracks closed up and don’t give them anything to shoot at, get your support to take them out.
3) Your support will need to be careful as you will be attacked by frags, Semtex, grenade launchers, RPG’s etc, each on could kill your team. Turn your blast shield on the second you see anything explosive, get your support to help A.S.A.P but keep them clear of the explosives. Again keep the shield pointed at the target
4) This one can be tricky. My personal favourite thing to do is whip out that trusty side-arm and shoot them before they get close, back round a corner, switch, carefully go back out. But melee fighting is another way to get out of this, just smash their face in. This happens suddenly so your team needs to know that they’re required. Be-careful of stun grenades, if you get stunned, back into a corner and give them nothing to hit.
General Movement Tactics
Riot shield front, your support just behind, but avoid clustering. When you enter a building, or turn a corner, your support should wait behind and wait for either the all clear, or the order to help. The Riot shielder is in command the whole time. His decision on routes/movement/engagement should be followed as he is the key piece.
Should your support get killed and you be isolated on your own you have a few choices to make
A)Whip out the side arm
B)Keep the shield equipped
C)Scavenge a primary weapon for your side arm
A) Hold up and wait for your support
B) Fall back and wait
C) Keep on pushing, leave the riot shield formation momentarily to
keep the attack alive: If the attack is going well and you’re gaining ground ALLWAYS choose the two C’s
If you need to wait for support I recommend A/C on option one and then A on option 2
If the attack failed, keep the shield out and fall back
General Tips
COMMUNICATION IS VITAL, both the support and riot shielder NEED to be ready and working together, otherwise the shielder will die.
Speed is of the essence, keep the speed up. When they see the riot shielder, they go under immediate pressure to take you out , that pressure is greatened when you’ve got a buddy packing an M4A1 and a whole lot of ammo.
If they catch on to your support, try to lure their attention away from where they are. If this doesn’t work pull out the side arm and kill them.
Avoid situations where you will be engaged from multiple angles, this will inevitably kill the shielder as they can’t block all the bullets.
If in doubt shield out.
Its a bit long, its my first ever guide so go easy on me. +rep if you liked, tell me if you didn't and why so I can improve.
I admit there is better tactics for riot shields and classes, but they tend to be a solo-run'n'gun method.
