There's only two ways to do this without psjb, the hdd method or a debug ps3, we know theunknown has a debug, im not sure about hunter, but aslong as the scipting is ok and the compression is correct the hhd method will work, you just have to make sure when you've finished modding your hdd it matches byte for byte what it was before you started.

I was thinking the same thing, but PSJailbreak is SO much faster. I change patches in 5 minutes. To change patches HDD way would take SEVERAL HOURS.
Good thing to take note of:
To get a modded patch running with out a jailbreak, you need to delete the stock patch and reinstall it. After you reinstall it quit the game without going into Multiplayer (never ran Multiplayer on fresh install).
If you don't, you won't get a black screen, but it won't run with mods.
