But then my other friend wanted to join session but i stopped him cuz i saw a thread about a kid whos stats got all messed when he joined a CL session. Does this happen alot or would he be fine?

if its a verication lobby then he would need to know how to verify himself, if you join and dont have verification then he is fine

If its a patch, say GodlyModz, he would be required to verify himself or he would get screwed over majorly. This could also be in custom patches as well.

To play GodlyModz you must hit left left on the DPad. Other patches vary though...so make sure you know what to do and you MUST be wary of these things.
