I just made a bit of a discovery and figured I'd let you all know about it. Short story - you don't need any debug pkgs or any of that. I just made a dummy file named default_mp.self, and that lets me edit the prestige too. Im thinking by changing this game data self in any way, we're causing the game to use one from the disc, which possibly doesn't have the same checks.
Long version.. I was thinking that, if we can really run the debug version self on an updated console, why can't we throw a homebrew self in it's place?? I did just that expecting to have my console freeze when loading MP, and it didn't, MP loaded just fine. I still had a modded patch in there, so I went into lan mode and what do you know, I can change prestige in game. So I decided to try it with a dummy file, which worked the same way, on both 3.41 and 3.50. I'm thinking you might even be able to just delete the damn self instead of making a dummy file.
edit - yep, you can just delete or rename default_mp.self, no dummy file needed.
