Or do I have to delete the modded patch then use the reg patch to play online regularly? I want to know because I don't wanna have to borrow his ps3 every time to host a lobby. Unless he's willing to let me buy it from him...

No, you can get in ranked lobbies without deleting your patch..
But if You get host, the lobby will be modded
