Get a USB flash drive dongle. Make a folder on it called ' PS3 ' and then in that, make a folder called 'UPDATE' then drag your file into that folder. Then plug it into your PS3. Go to settings>system update>update via USB>And update it

Yeah that is how you do it, i did this when i first got my new ps3. U can only jailbreak with a dongle or a 'Jailbreak Device',
and yes you need a USB to do this as you cant update to 3.41 via internet update as it brings you to the lastest, 3.55 FW.

so do i put the firmware on a normal usb or my jailbreak usb dongle cause i dont want to stuff up the dongle

You download the 3.41 filmware onto a regular FAT32 usb *NOT* your ps3 dongle. The ps3 dongle is for jailbreaking.

No you dont need the dongle for ANYTHING except jailbreaking.
on your USB Make a new folder called PS3 then make another one inside the ps3 folder called update then find a 3.41 FW and put that file inside update.
When you've done this on your ps3 go to update via storage device, and update.
