No... I don't think it will let you back up from a lower firmware.
You're better off trying to find a second hand ps3 on fleabay and using that .
I ve heard from 2 people now that when you upgrade from 3.41 to 3.55 the patch gets deleted..
what do you mean the patch? i saw something and the guy put a patch on then while jailbroke backed it uo and updated his ps3 and the patch was missing but he loaded the backup and it worked fine

Ok, the people I know just tried to load a mw2 modded patch on 3.41 and then upgrade and the patch got deleted.
If you can get it working, make a tut maybe..
I have one PS3. It WAS on 3.41 so I put all my patches on 1 by 1 and once the patch was on my PS3, I backed it up onto my external portable hard drive. I did this for each of the patches. Im now on 3.55 and whenever I want to switch my patch, all I do is restore it from my external hard drive . (Make sure your storage device (hard drive) is FAT32 formatted)

Go into My Computer and right click on your Hard drive. Go to Properties. It will say File System: And it will say something like ( NTFS, FAT 32, (Other)) . If it says FAT32, your good to go. If not, then google a program that turns it into FAT32.
