i would say it was CFW that ruined it. Before that, not many people had a jb device + 2 ps3s (3.41/latest)
CFW did play a part but this how I see it (Long story):
Only Hunter and Unknown knew how to do challenge lobbies before the first JB and kept the info to themselves, never told a thing. People tried and failed to get CLs on PS3. Then came 3.41 JB and only a few people had Challenge Lobbies and it was rare to get into one. Only Buc did new how to convert patches from 360 to PS3. There were no tools to make editing easy.
Only Elite Mossy, Godlymodz and Dudeitsbrians patches were for the PS3. They weren't that great as they didn't have any good mods except a few.
Along the line later Mossy releases V6, still only a few people could do CLs. During that same time a downgrader comes out for the PS3 which gave new new people the ability to do CLs. Yet again still rare to get into one. Then Mossy releases V8 and round that time I've started editing V8 and began showing my progress. People on NGU constantly messaged me for the patch, also Buc releases his MW2 converted which required a little manually work by the user.
Next Geohot releases CFW 3.55, this my friend ****ed up everything. NGU was invaded by non stop leeches looking to host or do damage on MW2. You then come along and decide your going to edit V8 and create an ultimate patch for NGU. This was another huge reason of MW2 CLs being patched. You began doing constant updates, day day until you had everything in your patch. Then all the leeches sitting on the side line invaded NGU again, making the site extremely slow to get your patch since it was the best one out there. At that time Buc had made a easier converter which only required two clicks and no manually input. Also someone released a tutorial on how to tests the patch on PC, which noobs how no idead you could do.
With you editing V8 and a easy converter available, people on NGU began making constant threads called, my edit of V8, V8 beast version and so on.
Literally pages in the modified patches section had been filled with these threads. That was also the day the REP system died. Anyway leeches began editing your patch, other peoples patches and so forth. This influences pretty much everyone to put custom patches on their PS3. With that, leeches/kids began force hosting on MW2, where they began deranking for fun, god mode, aimbot and so on. MW2 was broken at that point, MW2 was unplayable for anyone.
Hadn't Geohot not released CFW, Elite Mossy would have not shared his patch, which means you would have not edited it and thousands of leeches would have not ruined MW2.
Hunter and Unknown never released anything to the public, they knew the community would get this patched, Same with me, I never released my patch as I knew people would abuse it, I knew the less people had challenge lobbies the less people would know and IW wouldn't actually patch it. After MW2 was dead I released it, what harm would it bring.
