I sent him an invite and then immediately did find game and 3rd person cage match. We tried a bunch of times but never got put together. Any help? Can someone explain it from the beginning? Thanks.

Got to Multiplayer from the Main Menu. Select Play Online. Click Invite. Invite your friend..BUT tell him to wait to accept it [Just hover over "Accept"]. (This works better if you can call him on the phone to tell him when to accept.) but if you do not have his/her number, tell them to wait 5 seconds before selecting "Find Game". After you send the invite, wait 2 seconds and then click find a 3rd person cage match. Then 3 seconds later, your friend should be in the game. Good Luck. Hope I helped.
