Survival Mode has been described as a hold out mode where players’ objective is to survive endless waves of armed soldiers. Players will need to buy weapons off the wall, with their earned income, in order to fend off the increasingly difficult armed soldiers.
But something that needs to be understood is that Survival Mode was created from Zombies, Treyarch’s popular hold out based game mode. It’s not just another Call of Duty game mode. Survival Mode is almost a more sophisticated version, or re-make, of Zombies with some added bonuses.
Think of it like this: The 1989 Batman movie with Michael Keaton looked completely different from the 2008 Batman movie with Christian Bale. The two movies have the same concept, but the 2008 version has been revamped to look more sophisticated and have a better storyline.
Zombies and Survival Mode follow almost the same concept.
But why try to re-make a mode that has already done so well? It all comes down to the companies making the game. It’s business 101, folks.
Why Survival Mode Exists
Infinity Ward and Treyarch are two companies that, at one point or another, each developed a Call of Duty game separately. Infinity Ward made games where the focus was heavily on the multiplayer. Treyarch divided up the focus between the multiplayer and their own game mode: Zombies.
Zombies is a hold out game where players buy weapons of the wall (Or the Mystery Box) to fight of endless waves of Zombies.
Treyarch has only developed three Call of Duty games that have been released so far, with the last two of them having Zombies in it. And Treyarch was about to fully develop Modern Warfare 3 too, since Infinity Ward and Activision had gotten into some hot water, resulting in Infinity Ward’s departure.
But just when everyone expected the Modern Warfare series to be graced with Zombies for the first time, the unexpected happened: Infinity Ward got back on the project.
Now this is when Treyarch’s business 101 instincts kicked on: They couldn’t release a Zombies mode if Infinity Ward was also a part of production. Zombies was like Treyarch’s stamp on Call of Duty titles, not Infinity Ward’s. So after much discussion and brainstorming, Survival Mode was born.
Zombies and Survival Mode
The important thing to understand about Survival Mode is that it’s a separate mode from Zombies. Survival Mode can’t replace Zombies and Zombies can’t replace Survival Mode. Even though Survival Mode is a revamped version of Zombies, they are still two different game modes that call for different strategy. To help understand the division between the two game modes, here is a list of differences between them: You must login or register to view this content.
Differences:
Zombies have been replaced by human soldiers that can now carry weapons.
Kill Streak rewards are now obtainable for $500.
Points appear upon kills much like multiplayer.
Players can level up throughout the course of game play.
Weapon Armories allow you to purchase multiple guns from one area.
Equipment Armories allow you to purchase equipment and perks like Last Stand.
Soldiers spawn through air-drops rather than boarded windows.
Dogs (Attack Dogs) now carry explosives.
Enemy Juggernauts can be deployed.
Players go through Waves instead of Rounds.
Enemies can summon air support against you.
Players can deploy a Juggernaut by completing a 14 point streak.
There are certainly plenty of new features in Survival Mode. But many of the core aspects of the game are still the same as Zombies, such as the concept to survive as well as the weapon selection and point acquisition.
But even though the core game play elements of Survival Mode stays true to Zombies, the actual game play is much more different.

What I personally love about Zombies is the strategical factor of the game. In basic Call of Duty multiplayer game play, it doesn’t exactly take a Wiz to get the highest kills on a match. Frankly all it really takes is someone with Noob Toob and an RPG – and a little but of skill of course.
But Zombies calls for much more intelligence. You need to know how to move, where to move, when to spend money, etcetera. I expect the same to be with Survival Mode. The fact that your enemies can now shoot you calls for an entirely new strategy that must be put into action. You can no longer round up enemies into a train and obliterate them as you circle the perimeter. You’ll truly to have to play this like war.
Some good advice to keep in mind when playing is to try and stay hidden from the AI as much as possible, because if one enemy soldier spots you, others will too. Remember the AI are not Zombies so they are actually intelligent. If you kill one soldier, the nearby soldiers will engage in combat too.
And with the AI getting stronger with each wave, it may not be a good idea to engage in full fledge combat when you are outnumbered 1 to 10. It’s not like Zombies where you can annihilate trains in seconds without being attacked for the most part.
It’s also important to keep Kill Streaks such as air support fighting for you whenever possible. Air support can both kill enemy soldiers and distract them so you can deliver the final blow.
If you’re interested in seeing Survival Mode for yourself, Activision has released a trailer of the game mode.
