(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 1. Research - reference is gathered from various sources, books, internet, movies, etc...
2. Concept Art is generated to narrow the focus and get everyone to sign off on a specific 'look and feel'

3. Appropriate Uniforms and gear pieces are identified and ordered and arranged on the Mannequins using the concept art as a guide

4. These Uniformed Mannequins are then Scanned in 3D and photographed in numerous arrangements to provide variety and flexibilty

5.
The Uniforms are then scanned and photographed flat so we can derive textures and detail maps

6. The 3D scanned meshes are brought into Maya and "resurfaced" which is like 3D tracing. This gives us a mesh suitably optimized for games which we then 'Bake' the high-poly data into using Normal maps and Ambient Occlusion maps.

7.
An artist then uses this baked data as a template for creating the game textures painting in dirt, detail, and glossiness for the different surfaces in the uniform and gear.

8. Shaders or Materials are setup to specify how the lighting reacts to different surfaces like canvas, leather, metal, etc.

9. LODs or 'Levels Of Detail' meshes are generated for the distance rendering of characters. These meshes use progressively less polygons and are therefore cheaper and easier to render.

10. The character is then rigged to a skeleton so that it can be animated and exported as game data.
