in what format your hdd extern NTFS or FAT32?
if it is NTFS format it and put it in FAT32 it will detect.
FAT32 is the format that the PS3 uses the same format as the PS3 PS4 simply

My USB key is Fat32.

It does not detect your backup on my ps4.

If your using someone else's backup then that's why. Backups are for that PS4 only, may implement using others backups if they release data transfer but I don't think they'll do that for PS4 do to the exploit on mods on OFW from CFW transfer on PS3.
