If legal action was actually taken he would not be ok. ISPs are required to keep ip logs for a long time. So the ISP would just say "oh yea his ip was xxx.x.xx.xx on that date".
@OP i doubt you have anything to worry about. Thats just a scare tactic. Theres a ton of ways to get out of that if they actually tried to sue you. There is no way of proving where you got the key so theres no way of proving if you had any ill-intentions when you used it. Also, if you have wireless you can destroy the HD and NIC. Once thats done any evidence like data on you hd or your mac address is gone. Then you could claim it must have been someone tapped into your wi-fi because you have never heard of said game.
Long story short, don't worry about it.
