Debian is a linux distro as is ubuntu. Linux has many distros but the most popular used is ubuntu. I saw a video a while back on a nice editing program good job I favourite it Winky Winky.

As for total media extreme I believe if you search around google and youtube you can find the tutorial on how to get it to run. I believe there is a way but it wont be easy.

I belive there is a Jar version of Sony Vegas, so it will run on Linux, as for the lag you need to install it and not run it off the USB, there should be an install Icon on the desktop of the Demo and it will install it without getting rid of your current OS. Just go for it, its free Smile and Wine is an windows program emulator so it should run the exe files you want but it doesn't run all. Still, I love ubuntu!
