Pro advice: If you don't want to get caught, use a l33tz0rz tryhard name, totally different than your normal username. I got caught by the police last year because of not doing that. So if you want to hack, proxy on, use Uzbekistan VPS, and a totally different username.

Or just be classy and leave a very simple classy HTML page that just says "All your r00tz R ours!" or sudo bash rm -rf. You are correct though about always using a VPN and don't give them to much info, unless its some site no one cares about.
