In my opinion, the fan on it is really loud. I'm worried about turning the fan down in MSI Afterburner because I don't want the thing to overheat. Would my best option be an aftermarket cooler? If so, what should I look for?

There is no reason why that GPU should be loud (unless you have it in an extremely small case, with terrible cable management).

Oh sorry, it's the stock fan. I still think it's the GPU fan though because when I mess around with it in Afterburner I notice a significant difference in loudness.

It's still weird though. My reference 580 3GB is hardly even that loud. Although when I game I crank it up to 85 percent fan speed because as the GPU gets warmer the games can actually start to stutter a bit. I never let it pass 65 degrees. And even then it's tolerable.

My best bet now is to say that the stock cooler is just crap. You're better off replacing it if it bothers you that much with an aftermarket cooler. But frankly if you're going to spend that money you might as well just save up for a 660ti and sell your 6870.
