I put my computer to sleep and when I returned (apporx 17 hours later) it was off. I turned it back on and had a successful bootup where I got this little message.

Can anyone help me as to why this happened? I would like to point out that I Bit-defender Total Security 2013 and it is completely updated and does not find any virus' I can give all the specs on my computer because I built it, but I won't unless they are needed.

Pichu
RIP PICHU.
When your computer is in sleep, it is actually operating at just a very low amount of power. Applications still operate in the background but they are more of in a low usage state.

I keep my Skype on and if someone messages me while I have it on or they try to send messages, at times it will trigger a response for my computer to turn on. This can happen the same with automatic updates etc; sometimes they slip on through or something needs to operate in the background and it improperly functions and modifies code thus presenting errors.

Sleep mode isn't perfect and there has been cases where people can't turn their computer on, permanent sleep mode, so they have to reformat, etc.

The reason isn't going to be figured out as I too have had bugs with Sleep mode myself, I have Windows 8, but I've experienced it since XP.

Your best bet is to make sure all your software is up to date, your firmware etc. Make sure Windows is up to date and then do a clean shutdown. Before you go to sleep mode, save all your work to prevent corruption in case this happens again.

Aside from that, can't tell you much more.
