Post: Question about Windows backup

Dan
I'm a god.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Okay, I had Windows 8.1 on my laptop and I backed it up, then I installed Linux on it. The question is, if I install Windows 8.1 on my desktop could I install that backup and make it a legit installation of Windows 8.1?

Right which is what I thought, but I bought a copy from Walmart. Full retail. I checked the package to make sure it wasn't an OEM copy, couldn't find anywhere where it said it was an OEM copy.

OEM's only come on new machines. However you could just call microsoft and they could reissue you a new key. I know I had that problem for xp a long time ago where it had an activation limit.

Right I know OEM's come on new machines, you can also buy OEM copies online from places like Newegg. The copies that physical big box stores sell are not supposed to be OEMS, but for some reason, when I built my desktop and used the physical copy of Win 8.1 I had bought at Walmart the key was treated as an OEM key instead of a regular key. Now if I want to put Win8.1 on another PC or change Mobos in my desktop I have to buy a new key.

Refer to what I said above, you do not have to buy a new key. If you are able to present to them a valid key they can re-issue a new one. They do this all the time due to people upgrading hardware / reinstalls.
