AMD is getting rid of the ATI Technologies name, after merging with the company back in July, 2006.

The company announced a merger with ATI about four years ago, spending $5,400,000,000 to gain the lead in the chip market. Although the company itself was renamed to 'AMD Graphics Product Group', they kept the ATI brand name, and it remained popular amongst PC Gamers and tech-enthusiasts.

Now, after years of being one of the top computer-chip companies, AMD now feels that costumers are familiar enough with the Advanced Micro Devices name. So, in order to promote it's newest products, and raise awareness of its less popular brands, AMD has decided to cut ATI out of development.

After surveying thousands of people world-wide, they've come to the conclusion that when AMD and ATI merged, the preference for the brand tripled. Also, the brand's name became stronger than it's competitor's, and the number of people aware of the existence of the Radeon and FirePro brand has become very high.

All three points prove that the ATI brand name is no longer needed to drive customers to use AMD, even when facing rivals such as Nvidia.
It also proves that Radeon and FirePro do not need to be marketed as an ATI brand, they will do well on their own.

The switch to the AMD name will start this year, but only for new products. Existing products will, of course, keep the ATI name.

I don't know if it's me maybe I have bad luck with ATI/AMD but I will never buy another AMD/ATI branded product again. To sum it up my last bad experience I bought a ATI HD 5770 GC for $180 and the card is pure garbage constantly crashes on me while playing any video format and I can't find the problem for the life of me I'm guessing it's a defective Card and will be returning it. While the customer service they offer is OK I have just had to many problem with this company. So can't say I'm sorry to see the name go..... LOL

Ack. xP That sucks. Are you sure it's compatible with your motherboard, processor and everything? xD A friend of mine had the same problem, and that was the issue. Sad Awesome (With a different chipset of course, but you know. Dx)

Anyways, I hope you have better luck with this stuff in the future. I know what it's like to be screwed over by a graphics card. D;

EDIT: Personally, I've never had an ATI/AMD graphics card, I always come across NVIDIA's. xD And for the most part, those are great.

Yeah everything is compatible, when I had my $130 XFX 9800 GC it ran so smooth then it went down after a year and I decided to upgrade and against my better judgment I went with the ATI and boom it never fails...LOL ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR GUT dammit. I have read around and for some reason a lot of people seem to be having the same problem I am having with no solution in sight it will run for a few days w/out a problem and next thing you know it will crash 3 times in one day while watching you tube videos it's the strangest thing in the world. Thanks though, I might be investing in an NVIDIA Real soon.... lol :bro:

I use nvidia with a AMD core... I have had no problems with my AMD processor but plenty with my Nvidia graphics so I will be switching to AMD/ATI now for my graphics... I think it is time to change the name also...

Yeah, I've always assumed that crossing brands wasn't a good idea. xD AMD/AMD/AMD is more than likely a better idea than AMD/Intel/NVIDIA. I don't even think that's necessarily possible.

I'm eventually going to go from NVIDIA to AMD when I get the money. This is my current setup: You must login or register to view this content.

That's a nice setup. :y: It took me forever to finally figure out exactly what I needed to be able to play games on the PC, so when I found the computer I have, I was all over it. xD It was a good price, and all my friends told me it would do fine, so I just went ahead and got it.
