How to Clean your Registry Tutorial!

I saw several people asking about questions about their regisrtry, and how to clean it. I finally decided to post a very good Tutorial covering, Cleaning, to FAQ on the Registry Smile

Cleaning your Registry!

Okay this is using a program on your Computer, that edits and fixes your Reistry as it can be filled with viruses, or Programs that don't completely un-Install. :O

STEP 1: Getting the Registry Editor.

1) First click Start on the bottom Left cornor of the Task Bar.

2) Click Run

3) Than type:
    regedit

4) On the top of the Window press File, Than go down too Export

5) Type a name for the file name for the backup file and save it.

After creating a backup of your registry, you can go to the left side of the registry editor window and view how your computer is configured.

Click on the plus sign to expand a section of the registry editor. A "well-used" area for anyone manually deleting registry files is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE." This area is used to make registry changes to hardware and software.

Cleaning Application's from Registry

1) Expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" key

2) Expand the "Software" key.

3) Look for keys that contain either the application's name, or more commonly, the application's developer (company name).

4)Highlight a key for the application.

5)Press "Del" to delete it.

Finding An Application

1) First you must press
    CTRL F

2) Enter the text used to search for the application's listings.

3) Click on "Ok" to search. The key should be highlighted when found.

4) With the proper key highlighted, press "Del" to delete it.

5) Press "F3" to find the next result and repeat.

Remove Annoying Start up Programs!

On most peoples computers when you boot the computer and you just get to the desktop there will be a program loading up such as Adobe Reader, QuickTime Player, and Real Player to load a new update or similar Pop up.

1) In your Registry editor Navigate to :
    My Computer\ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Current Version

2) Highlight the RUN Key

3) Look for the values inside of the left pane. These can be shortcuts to executable files.

4) Highlight a value to remove it Smile. If you're not familiar with these or are unable to guess which ones are which applications, I usually use Google for it or use a process search engine such as Process Library.

5) Again to Delete it just simply press "Del". Oh and if you want to delete multiple files if your sure what they are you can simply hold down "Shift" while clicking Smile

6) Repeat this process for the same key path inside of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER location as well. If you chosen application installs for "all users", it will put these startup items inside of the the local machine folder. For current user or single user software installs, they will be put in teh current user folder.

Close the Editor when finished Smile

Registry FAQ Dancing[/CENTER]

Can a registry cleaner help my PC run better?

Yes! A good registry fix utility can definitely make noticeable differences in PC boot times and performance speed. They will also help eliminate error messages, as well as frequent crashes or freezes. When the registry gets corrupted or cluttered, the operating system will have a hard time running correctly, resulting in the problems mentioned above. If you can clean up the registry your computer will run like it did when you first got it.

Is it 100% safe for Registry editing?

In most cases, no. It is certainly possible to make changes to the registry, however unless you know exactly what you're doing you risk damage to your operating system. If you make a change to the wrong file you could cause your PC to stop working completely. Windows might not load at all, and programs might not start up. Only the very best computer technicians are qualified to repair the registry manually. For more information on editing the registry manually, check out Windows registry information for advanced users. If that page looks at all confusing to you, don't try to "do-it-yourself."

Do I have to get another Computer?

No! If your computer is running slow with lots of errors and crashes, you should definitely try to run a registry cleaner program. Before spending $1000 on a new computer, try scanning with a registry cleaner first. It could save you a LOT of money in the end. Many problems that people believe are the death of their computer are not!

What is Registry Anyways?

The Windows registry is like a filing cabinet where settings and configurations for programs, hardware, and user data are stored. If that filing cabinet becomes disorganized, Windows has a hard time running correctly.

As quoted from Microsoft:

The Microsoft Computer Dictionary, Fifth Edition, defines the registry as:

A central hierarchical database used in Microsoft Windows 98, Windows CE, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 used to store information that is necessary to configure the system for one or more users, applications and hardware devices.

The Registry contains information that Windows continually references during operation, such as profiles for each user, the applications installed on the computer and the types of documents that each can create, property sheet settings for folders and application icons, what hardware exists on the system, and the ports that are being used.
