I got my macbook pro a few days ago and then found out it wouldn't read my portable hard drive and today i figured out how to fix this. The only downside to doing this is that it has to erase everything off the hard drive for it to work so I would recommend backing it up to your HDD.

Step 1: copy the contents of your NTFS hard drive to your mac's HDD.
Step 2: Open disk utility
Step 3: Click on the hard drive you want to convert in the sidebar
Step 4: Click on erase
Step 5: Where it says format select Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Step 6: Click erase and then your done, you will now be able to read and write on your NTFS drive.

If you're running a dual boot I wouldn't recommend this as there is another was using the Universal Unique Identifier and terminal and I don't think that it erases your drive, there are some tutorials on youtube to do it that way.

I figured this out myself and didn't see any tutorials on youtube but if someone has already posted it sorry and feel free to delete this.

Good tutorial for ppl new to macs, If you really want to use your drive with windows, I partitioned my drive in 3 partitions, 1 storage (Mac OS extended Journaled) 2- exFat, which you can write and read with windows, 3- backup (Mac os extended...) This way you can use your drive on Windows and Mac.
