(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});If you read any print or online technology news sites, you've probably seen images and videos of the new user interface that's currently in development at Microsoft for the forthcoming Windows 8. The overall concept is of something much chunkier and widget-based than Windows 7, thus bringing the desktop OS more into line with the idea of operating systems on phones and tablets.
If you want to try out some of the Windows 8 ideas right now, you can. A freeware project called Mosaic, which has no connection with Microsoft, brings some of the Win8 UI elements to Windows 7.
To get the current version of the program, which is officially designated as beta 1, just go to You must login or register to view this content.. You'll need Windows 7, as well as .NET framework v4. The Mosaic download itself is just 0.5 MB. There's nothing to install - just unzip the downloaded file and then run the mosaic application file. When you're done, click its Exit button and you'll find yourself back in familiar territory.
There's already a handul of widgets that you can add to your Mosaic desktop. Just click on the Add button to browse them.
