Such programs are very useful, though obviously you should never back up the contents of one hard disk onto a different part of the same drive. Ideally, you should back up to another computer on your network, or to an external drive.

Bvckup (think of the A as being upside down) is a new backup utility for Windows which continually monitors one or more folders and performs a backup whenever a monitored files changes. It's very simple to use. Just create one or more backup settings (which need consist of nothing more than a source and destination folder), then leave the program to get on with it. The toolbar, as you can see from the screen shot below, contains nothing more complicated than a Go and Stop button. Even these are irrelevant, if you choose to have backups take place automatically rather than when you manually start them.

Bvckup is currently in beta. It's a 0.5 MB download, runs on Windows XP and above, and is free to use. According to the web site, the finished product will cost $19.95, but beta testers will be rewarded with a free licence. So now's the time to try it out.
