I know that a shitload of users on here, NGU, use ScreenSnapr on Windows, and i know that almost as much of us have switched to linux. But the thing that i missed, and im sure lots of others had, was a screensnapr program for Linux. Well now i've found one, called You must login or register to view this content..

*Note: Lookit is still a Beta application so use at your own risk!

Start by typing:
    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:lookit/ppa
Then this:
sudo apt-get update
Then this:
sudo apt-get install lookit

  • Command #1 tells the system to add the You must login or register to view this content. to your system's repository.
  • Command #2 tells the system to contact the repositories that you have in your You must login or register to view this content. and tells you if there's any updates.
  • Command #3 tells the system to look through your You must login or register to view this content. for the package 'lookit'.
So, that's Lookit installed. Now if you use Unity it's wise useful to add a Launcher of Lookit to the Unity sidepanel. To do this, press the super key to open the Dashboard, then type "lookit". Once the Lookit application appears, click and drag it to the Launcher and drop it where you would like it to stay.

The main feature of Lookit is sharing images with your friends, so to configure how to share the images online, right click on the Lookit Launcher and choose Preferences. Once there, go to the third tab and from there you can choose to use the preconfigured imgur.com settings or custom FTP settings. Some people may not know how to correctly enter the FTP settings so here is an example:

Obviously, replace the FTP username and password with the ones that correspond to the server that you chose. The important part of setting up custom FTP is ensuring that for the URL, you include a trailing slash (slash at the end of the URL) because if not then you will get an upload error. The chosen directory must also exist before you set this up because you may get errors.

To take a screenshot with Lookit, you can right click on the Launcher (or the indicator on the top bar) and choose either:

  • Capture Area
  • Capture Active Window
  • Capture Screen
It's pretty self-explanatory which one does which. If you choose "capture area" you will be given a tool to select a portion of the screen (by left clicking and dragging to highlight the desired section) and then it will be uploaded to the site which you chose in the previous step.

So there you go! Screensnapr on Linux!

OVER 9000!
I personally use scrot and the imgur API's, a lot easier if you set up a script / alias for it then just use that.
