Post: Thinking about upgrading...

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); All right. Based on the title at the top, you probably know what I'm asking xD

I've been playing APB: Reloaded (Third-Person F2P Shooter MMORPG game, just google it) quite a bit lately, and it takes up maybe 96% of my memory, but doesn't touch my CPU. It can also be quite intensive on my GPU, and after an hour or two of gaming, I start to get lag spikes on it.

So I was thinking about upgrading my memory (RAM) and my graphics card. I currently have a Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1GB, here: You must login or register to view this content.

I could max out practically any game I wanted to, ex. Crysis 2, or Batman: Arkham City, with a constant 40-50 FPS, but for some reason, it lags on APB. Is that just because my memory is being used up?

So I guess I'm wondering if I should also upgrade my video card and memory, or just my memory (I currently have 4GB of ram, and I'm pretty sure it's this: You must login or register to view this content.)

What do you guys think?

What you could do, is to buy an identical graphic card. Then run both at the same time. But that only works if you motherboard got two PCI-E slots close to each other, and has SLI support. That should make the game run smoothly. And you might want to get some new RAM chips. If your motherboard support any better speed then 1333 MHZ, go with that. The higher the better. I honestly don't think anything above 4-6GB is needed, as you would rarely use more then that at once. I recommend Corsair's DOMINATOR chips. I got two DOMINATOR 4GB chips (8GB in total) clocked at 2100MHz. Really quick and good. Winky Winky

Hope this helps.

I'd get a GTX 560 TI for the simple fact its the new gen, and you can run it in SLI (basically 2 cards at once) later if you start to notice any lagg. You can get a GTX 560 or a Ti (Ti is better and only a bit more expensive) for around £150-£200. RAM choice doesn't really matter, just make sure its more than 4gb and 1600mhz.

Wish you luck man.

How do I know if it can handle RAM above 1333, and support 2 SLI GPUs?

This should clarify the RAM question:
You must login or register to view this content.

And I see the mobo has two PCI-E slots, but I see nothing about SLI support. Might want to call and ask them first if you are thinking about dual GPUs. Remember the two cards has to be identical (same clock speeds etc).

I just did some research and my MB has:
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)

If I were to get a second card of the same kind, and put it in the PCI-E Slot running at x4, it would only use 1/4 of the stuff that the video card could do, compared to the card that I already have that is running at full capacity in the PCI-E slot running at x16. I think I might just get some more RAM, and maybe just upgrade my video card later on all together. I currently have this: You must login or register to view this content.

If I were to just get a second one of those, would that be fine? Or should I consider replacing my ram with that Corsair one that you said? I had looked at them, but it only said they were compatible with i3s, i5s, and i7s, and I have an AMD phenom ii quad core... stare

Or if I were to just sell my gtx 460 1gb, how much better would a gtx 560 Ti be?

If you got another card, I'd recommend to put the 2nd one on a x16 as well. But it's not necessary.

And regarding the RAM, I think the speed on it will be the bottle neck, not the amount of GB. So I'd get new chips that's faster. Like these You must login or register to view this content. Winky Winky

I think getting a second card would just be a waste of money, because I only have 2 16x PCI-E slots, and I would be putting the second one on the 16x slot that runs at 4x, which would barely do anything in terms of boosting performance (I might be getting all this wrong, I'm just going off of what I learned from looking it up). If I were to just replace the card I already have, for under $200, would there really be a card where I would really notice a difference? Like in a GTX 580 Ti?

And for the RAM, if I got the Corsair Vengence, would I be able to just put them in the 2 slots next to my existing RAM? Or does all RAM have to be the same speed/make? Also, is there anything I have to do in order to add on/replace my RAM? Or do I just shut down my pc, put in the new cards, and I'm set to go?

Sorry I have so many questions... My dad is the tech wiz, and he's on a business trip for 2 weeks, and he doesn't know im getting new ram/maybe new video card :fyea:

You shouldn't use your old memory chips in addition to the vengance ones. The speed difference would only create a bottle neck and you wouldn't get maximum out of your new chips. And I don't know much about nVidia cards, but this is what I have (same model, I got a different brand) You must login or register to view this content. And it runs anything like Witcher 2 to battlefield 3 on maximum. Of course other hardware comes into play, but this is one badass card!

I just got my Vengence in the mail, and when I took out my old ram and put them in, my pc booted, but it wasnt displaying an image. So I put my old ram back in with my new ram, and it booted fine. And, apparently my old RAM also runs at 1600, so there is no speed difference :P

Also, how do I reserve a certain number of gigs of ram for a game to use? APB:R eats memory like the cookie monster eats cookies.
