Stop.

Your Motherboard is socket 775 (I know because of your CPU)

I'm sorry to say but you can't do too many upgrades on this PC without upgrading the PSU and Motherboard.

Motherboard: $60 You must login or register to view this content.

And the i5 2500k

YOU CANNOT I REPEAT CANNOT PUT A i5 2500k ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD. IT WILL NOT WORK.

A better solution would probably be to go AMD. I know, sucks, but it's going to shave you 60-80 at least.

After CPU Upgrade:

RAM: $35 You must login or register to view this content.

PSU (You'll probably need it):

GPU: Well, I tried my best, it went a over budget, but when you have the money, buy a 460 or a 6870.

Nicely spotted. I never even looked at his other components.

Basically a socket is the formation of the slots on a motherboard for the CPU/Cooler to fit into. The main/best one is 1155/1156, its the main one Intel use but as Millz pointed out your motherboard doesn't support this socket. You could spend £65 to get a good new motherboard that would support Intel but it would work out more expensive than if you went down the AMD path. Personally I usually tell anyone to stay away from AMD but in this case if you want to save money they're probably the best.

Edit after researching i found this: You must login or register to view this content.
I understand it now.... But why would i need a new PSU cant i just use the one im using now?

What is your current PSU? Aka how many Watts is it? If this is a bough PC from dell or something they always tend to skimp out on PSU's unless you specifically added one in yourself.

Essentially an LGA 775 board won't be able to hold a LGA 1155 CPU (If you plan to go with a i5 2500k or an i3 2100 or whatever)

Edit: I'm not sure of the dimensions of your case... would it be possible for you to measure it? If possible, can you also check how much space you have between the HDD bays and the motherborad?

This looks like it will fit in your case: You must login or register to view this content.

For the processor: We still have to make the decision between the i5 2500k or you could buy the i5 2400 or the i3 2100.

CPU: i3 2100 = 90.00 You must login or register to view this content.

MOBO = 40.00 You must login or register to view this content.

PSU = 20.00 You must login or register to view this content.

RAM = (YOU NEED IT) 8GB = $32.00

TOTAL: $200 (Taxes yadadad)

(The 2100 is fine for gaming. People on youtube have shown it running BF3 at max with a 560ti.)

GPU: Let me think about it.

Your PC is probably not best suited for overclocking, so here: You must login or register to view this content.

This is what I would recommend.

Now unfortunately it is what I suspected, 305 watts is most likely 5 watts over what this PC actually uses. (Seriously, companies really like to give out cheap PSU's)

However, it should still work after the above upgrade. When it comes to upgrading the GPU, that's a different story. You would need around 500 watts. If you have the extra money, buy this:

It's $20 and it's 650 Watts. It's not the greatest, there might be a lot of cables that you need to manage, but it should get the job done, actually it has some room for upgrades as well.

With this setup, plus a GPU added at a later point in Time (which is why you need the new PSU) you should easily play the game on medium.

Also, if you have the chance, you should upgrade your RAM, since it's most likely running at like 800 mhz or something and it's most likely DDR2 which is pretty outdated. You might need more than 4GB for battlefield, not sure.

Ok thanks for all the help but in all honesty should i get a new case for my PC? and then i can have a normal sized motherboard or should i stick with what i have and use the small one you suggested?

I think i5 2500k would be best but is it needed i don't want to be upgrading again until at least Christmas.. but i want to be able to run most upcoming and current games on medium

Look at my updated post. In all honesty if you have the money then yes.

Wait a second. Your HDD's are SATA correct? They don't use IDE? I can't tell 100% from the pictures. I don't think they are but if they are then you'll also need some adapters.
