A computer does not simply read blanks. That's the reason its not being read. Because there is nothing on it.
If you want to be certain, go buy some blank CD's and put them in. But I guarantee there is nothing wrong with your machine.
I'll have to correct you there. On most computers a window, icon or something will open once you put a blank disc in it and ask what you'd like to do with it.
