My System:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2700k @ 4.5Ghz
GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB OC Edition
MOBO: ASUS P8Z68-v pro/gen3
HDSad Awesome 1TB WD Caviar Black @ 7200rpm
PSU: 1000W Novatech Black Edition (Rebranded OCZ Supply)
COOLING: Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator + Fan
DVD/RW: Some generic Liteon Drive
RAM: G.Skill RipjawsX 4x4GB @ 1866mhz
MONITOR: 26" Generic Monitor
CASE: Coolermaster HAF-X E-ATX

Basically, my computer decides that it wants to lock up every now and then.. I have tortured all my hardware so i know it's all working as it should be (CPU, GPU, RAM), I haven't properly tested my motherboard or PSU however.

I'll be on iTunes listening to music and browsing the internet and i will get lockups where i cant do anything that will last anything from 10 seconds to 3 minutes. Then the computer will come back.. if i was watching a film i'd have to wait for the audio and video to resync. Also the sound will loop and sound like my computers about to transform into optimus prime during the crash time. I was told that it was windows shutting down my hard disk after 20 minutes but i have changed this setting and even though the crashes seem to have receeded somewhat they still happen.

However, running all the latest games on steam at maximum settings for 12 hours at a time is fine and i can run it for as long as i want with very low temparatures, thanks to my Coolermaster case and stupid amount of noisy fans.

Thanks for any help guise!

Is it only when you use or watch media? could be a driver problem?

All my drivers are installed and latest version, it's when my systems not being fully utilised.. i.e when I'm not doing much like browsing the web or using iTunes or vlc, sometimes I can just be on my desktop and it will happen, but like I said 12+ hours of skyrim maxed out is fine at about 40 degrees C :/

Torturing your hardware as in running Prime 95 and Furmark as well as a disk benchmarking utility?

Just because it can run Skyrim maxed out does not mean that your overclock is stable. My first guess is that you have an unstable overclock on your CPU. Either that or your HDD might have some issues as well.

That would be my first guess.

Yeah that's right, I used burnintest, prime and I tested my HDD with a tool.. Can't remember which.. And I ran memtest86 for about 6 passes.. All these tests passed without errors

Weird. Does this only happen when you are on idle or doing light tasks?

Also, you should check out Event Viewer.

Only happens when idle, or light tasks or when I'm downloading large files on steam etc. although if I'm playing a game or something and downloading at the same time it will freeze.. But if I'm just playing the game it's fine :/

I had similar symptoms when I was overclocking as well. I could pass Prime 95 but I would still BSOD on idle. Would you mind posting the settings that you are using for your overclock on your CPU?

I'm at work now but I'll post it when I get home, I haven't had a single BSOD though.
