Post: Building my own PC

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); It seems like there are some experts in building custom PC's here Winky Winky

What I want is a PC that is specifically for video editing and the odd GTA III here and there...

A friend on another forum gave me these for my budget of £400

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 AMD 970 AM3+ - With an AM3+ FX CPU, you should get a 900 series based motherboard chipset. The 970 is the basic, cost effective variant. £62.99

RAM: Corsair 2GB Value Select 1333MHz DDR3 - I would buy two of these. £8.51 per stick.

CPU: AMD FX-6100 Black Edition 6 Core 3.3GHz - This is not the fastest, nor slowest, FX CPU. £82.98

HDSad Awesome Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB SATA3 - This should be enough for most uses. £53.99

Case: Gigabyte GZ-X2 Black ATX - A good mid-range case, don't expect to cram huge top-tier graphics cards into it, however. £29.99

Power Supply: PowerCool 650W PC-650AUBA - I'm not familiar with this brand. This is enough to power most graphics cards. £38.99

ODSad Awesome Samsung SH-S222BB 22x SATA Dual Layer DVD-Rewritable Black - This is a standard DVD drive. £11.58

GPU: Asus 1024MB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7750 - This is a mainstream graphics card. It can handle gaming well, but lacks the performance of the 7800 and 7900 series. £76.50

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit - You need this. Windows 8 will be out in about three weeks, you may want to wait until then. £67.50

Grand Total: £458.93, all of these prices include VAT.

If you want to save a bit of money and do not game, you can remove the GPU and swap out the motherboard and CPU for the components below.

Motherboard: Asus F1A75-V PRO AMD A75 Socket FM1 - AMD's new FM2 CPU's are out, but there aren't many in stock. £78.90

CPU: AMD Llano A8 X4 3850 Quad Core 2.9GHz Socket FM1 - This is AMD's APU design that has a graphics card on the CPU itself. The GPU isn't fantastic, but can handle all standard PC activities well and light gaming. Price £72.95

I've decided that I no longer just want a video editing PC but I also want a PC that can run Battlefield PLay4FREE (as a benchmark) at maximum settings. Any recommendations for my newly thought out dream PC?

I'm still restricted to a £400 budget. But if I can beg my parents I could probably stretch it to £600. Initially all the money is my own so I want to stick to my own money rather than having to go to my parents for more...

I recently built this for my brother and I don't know about battlefield but it runs every game he plays.

- This hard drive is only £15 more expensive than the Barracuda but has much better performance for if you ever want to record with Dxtory. If this is out of the question then you can downgrade it.
- No OS. The cracked copy of Windows 7 works flawlessly now, and that saves a ton of money. If you want some specific links then feel free to ask, my last two computers have been running cracked copies of Windows 7 for about a year. Updates work, no flaws at all.
- No optical drive. I've never had much luck with these and you can easily use a USB stick for just about everything now... also, the motherboard and case support USB 3.0!
- The 7770 has reasonably good performance and this specific card boasts 2GB of video memory. You want that.
- If you can afford another £25 then upgrade the CPU to an AMD FX-8350.
- 8GB memory @ 1866. For media editing you really want at least 8GB of memory, and typically the standard is don't dip below 1600 MHz. I've gone for 1866 as it seems to provide a noticeable performance increase for APUs, which whilst not chosen in this build, AMD are pushing a lot at the moment and it will give you options in the future should the technology gain more traction as I expect it to.
- Power supply... hmm. Not modular, but it'll do what you want just fine. Generally aim for 80+ bronze with PSUs.
- The case looks like some sort of alien spaceship. If that isn't your thing, go for an ATX Mid-Tower with front panel USB 3.0 ports.
