People use Hosts files as a way to block online advertising (ads), or known malicious or criminal domains and servers which may contain spyware, adware, and other malware. They do so by adding entries for those sites that redirect their requests to an another address (which is the dead-end destination). Often, the local (loopback) address 127.0.0.1 is used for such purposes.

Never get ads again not even on NGU if you havent donated but thats not why Im posting this I have been using this for a year and a half and have never gotten a single popup or ad.

The easiest and safest thing to do is use Firefox with either the NoScripts or Adblock plugin. However, editing the hosts file would be good for preventing malware/viruses from communicating with their control server(s).

Well I dont like firefox and noscrips can get annoying at times.
