It seemed to be a winrar file and I opened it to see a file called "scripts" inside and I closed it. I never ran a file besides trying to view inside the "scripts.gz" file. And throughout all of this I was using a VPN. Is there a possibility that I'm infected and if so how likely?

After it finished downloading he told me that he ratted me and went on about stealing all my stuff. So I just turned off my PC and haven't turned it on since. He also said he was going to connect using putty.

In other words could I have been infected by just accepting a download or opening/viewing a compressed .gz file?

This was about 3-4 years ago, I used RATs and a lot of the options today were not exactly out there when I doing it. Plus, I didn't have access to much money so; that's why I would modify.
