And what really frustrates me is when I changed player to the nearest man, and instead of running he stops. Leaving a massive gap!

Anyone have any tips for me?

press circle it calls a second player on the opposition then close the gap with the guy you are controlling

if a defender is running towards you its best if you jostle, so hold down the L2 button (ps3) while your holding down the sprint button, then you can time your tackle

I had the same problem mate just keep improving your players, I found it was the players fault.

As someone said before, Just Jockey Using the L2 button/ Sprint at the same time.
All you need to do is Get your Man inbetween the ball and the goal. I don't often attempt to get the ball, I just wait & wait Cos they usually slow down and you can just nip the ball away
