BJ:
[multipage=Passing]
FIFA 12 is all about knowing when to pass and when to dribble. It is now very effective to mix it up, and unlike FIFA 11, you can now expect to blast past some unbalanced defenders with an opportune dribble. However, passing is still a very extremely important skill to know how to do well, and arguably one of the most important concepts in FIFA 12.
So, what sort of passes are there?
There are a variety of ways to get the ball from one team mate, to another Such as;
- Regular Pass
- Lofted Pass
- Crossing
- Through Ball
- Chipped Through Ball
Regular pass; By pressing the default passing button of your gaming console, (X on PS3, A on Xbox) you play a simple sidefooted pass to a teammate. These passes will generally go right to your target's feet, so if they have a lot of room in front of them to run on to, you might want to consider the through ball, which will be explained later. Although the default assisted controls will aid your passing direction and power, you do have a considerable amount of control over the power of your pass, so analyze the distance between you and your passing target and hold down the passing button accordingly so it gets to him without being intercepted. However, if you want full control over the direction and power of your shots, I highly recommend looking into changing your passing settings to manual.
Lofted pass; The lofted pass is useful when your passing target is wide open, but there is a player of the opposing team in the way of this. By simply lofting the ball over your opponent's head and to your target, you can evade this problem. Another useful time to utilize the lofted pass is by passing up to a big, tall striker. Most of the time, he will out-jostle and out-jump the defenders to head the ball to another player or even chest it down to his feet. This is useful because when done well, it is so sudden that the midfielders don't have enough time to get back, and you can attack just their back line.
Crossing; Crossing is an incredibly useful tool in FIFA 12. Utilize your quick wingers and get them down the line to play a cross in. However in FIFA, you can decide what kind of cross you want to play. There are three types of crosses in FIFA 11.
The Traditional Lofted Cross – by holding down the lofted pass button on your console,( SQUARE on PS3 X on Xbox) your player will play in a cross that tends to go high enough that heading the ball is the best option for your strikers.
The Low Cross – by tapping the lofted pass button down twice in quick succession, your player will play in a lower cross to the ground that is usually put away by not only headers, but also volleys. The ideal time to use this is when your striker us approaching the near post and there is not a defender in front of him, or when the player who is going to cross the ball is very close to the end line.
The Ground Cross – a ground cross is executed by tapping the lofted pass down three times in quick succession. This will result in a ground level, hard cross across the face of goal. This is useful for when the defensive line is rushing back to the goal to defend the cross but haven't quite made it there yet. If your striker is in line with the defence, but is faster and will beat them to the ball, then go for it. When done well, the cross will nestle right in front of your striker nicely for him to bang into the back of the net, The ground cross is most effective because not only can your attacker get to the ball for an easy tap in, the defence can easily knock the ball into there own goal.
Holding down LB on Xbox or L1 on Playstation while crossing with any of these three crossing variants produces an early cross which is best used when your strikers are still not quite into the area, so you play it into their path to run on to.
Through Ball; The through ball is an incredibly dangerous weapon to use against your opponent. The through ball is a pass which doesn't go directly to your passing target, but rather in front of him for him to run on to. Obviously, don't try this if your target doesn't have space in front of him, or if his marker or defenders around him are faster than him. The best uses for the through ball are for when playing wingers to give them a head start on their dribble down the line, or playing through holes in the defensive line so your striker can simply run past the defenders to be in on goal. The through ball can also be utilized to quickly speed up your attack in the midfield also, your midfielders will have space in front of them too!
Chipped Through Ball; Chipped Through balls have the same concept as the regular through ball, but that the pass is, well, chipped! This is useful for when your passing target has a lot of space in front of him and is faster than the defenders around him, but they are blocking passing lanes through which you can play a grounded through ball.
[multipage=Shooting]
Shooting saw some big improvements in FIFA 12, when compared with FIFA 11. In FIFA 12, you can expect to score from many different angles and distances, whereas you probably couldn't say the same about FIFA 11. Shots are generally much harder than they have been in previous versions of FIFA, so you can expect to score from a variety of ranges, provided you're using a player who has decent shooting attributes, especially power. Most people overlook it, but it's worth knowing who has good shooting stats and who doesn't so you know when you should be shooting.
What are other techniques to shoot?
- Regular Shot
- Finesse Shot
- Acrobatic/Fancy Shot
- Chip Shot
Regular Shot; The regular, laces shot is best for long range shooting, but it is also quite effective from closer ranges as well. You perform the regular shot with your console's default shooting button alone. An important tip is that you should pay attention to your set-up touch before shooting. By this I mean that you can't expect to rip one with a small touch, you need to set yourself up with a touch in front of your player so he can get some power into it. Regular shots can also be volleys and headers, so the controls are no different.
Finesse Shot; Finesse shots are sidefooted strikes which are particularly useful when shooting from in and around the penalty box. Finesse shots are generally more accurate than regular shots, but will be much less powerful. They are useful for picking out corners, but don't expect them to be as useful as they were in FIFA 11. In FIFA 12, they're still highly effective from tight angles, but it's not as ridiculous as in FIFA 11. Finesse shots also have a decent bit of curve, the amount depending on the strength of shot and time it has to curve. To execute a finesse shot on Xbox 360, hold down RB while shooting, and R1 while shooting on PS3.
Acrobatic/Fancy Shot; Unlike FIFA 11, in FIFA 12, you have the ability to control the occurrence of acrobatic shots such as bicycle kicks or diving headers. To do so, you obviously need to be set up correctly, including having the ball in the air. For Xbox, hold down LT as you shoot, and L2 for Playstation. For lower shots, such as double-tap or triple-tap low crosses, you can do the same thing and pull off some cheeky little flicks and backheels. It's really quite simple, but it's more about the timing and set up than anything, but you can pull off some really spectacular goals if you do this well.
Chip Shot; Chip shots are useful shots which are used to cheekily loop the ball over the goalkeeper and into the goal. A chip shot has a high arc and is not very powerful, but is useful for when the goalkeeper is not on his line and a bit farther away from the goal than he should be. This scenario occurs a lot when a player is on a breakaway and the opponent rushes his goalkeeper out too early, giving you enough time to chip it over him before he gets too close to cut off your angle. Sometimes in FIFA 12, goalkeepers are off their line for no good reason, so you should look for this and give it a try if he is. On Xbox 360, chip shots are executed by holding down LB as you are pressing the shoot button, and likewise for PS3 although you want to hold down the L1 button instead.
[multipage= Defending]
The most important thing to remember is that tackling isn't your main focus until your opponent reaches your penalty box. It is very hard to correctly time tackles, so you need to be patient and just contain your opponent. Make sure you're jockeying so that you're actually closing down players. Quickly switch players and close down passing lanes, forcing them to make a mistake. More often than not, you'll eventually intercept a pass without your opponent even nearing your penalty box. The alternative, quickly trying to just tackle your opponent off the dribble, doesn't provide quite the same success rate.
When your opponent does reach the penalty box, you need to be able to tackle correctly. Tackling is all about timing. You need to anticipate when the ball will be within your reach and be sure not to tackle too early, as this will result in your player mindlessly flinging his foot forward, allowing the opponent to dribble past. Timing will come in time, but if you contain your opponent well (previous paragraph), you shouldn't actually have to tackle all that much.
Other ways to tackle?
- Standing Tackle
- Sliding Tackle
Jockeying is a really good way to get in a good position to protect your goal and good to make your opponent (the attacker) to change direction and have to change his tactics, Jockeying is simply performed by hold L2 on PS3 and LT on Xbox, To Perform a Sprinting Jockey Hold R2 and L2 on PS3 and LT and RT on Xbox.
Any Other Tips?
- Use the right stick to change players quicker.
- Be patient!
- Stay goal-side of your opponent.
- Time your tackles well.
- Anticipate through balls and bring a player back for cover.
- Be wary of skill moves, just focus on jockeying the player.
- Use the slide tackle sparingly, and in only dire situations.
- If you are to win the ball, make good use of your counter attack!
- KEEP POSSESSION, Attacking is the best way to defend, if they don't have the ball, they cant do anything! So keep the pressure on them and the ball in there half.
[multipage=Attacking]
When Attacking your team should be structured so no defence upfield or strikers in defence etc, Its just going to lead to your opponent gaining possesion.
When Attacking play with patience, i always see players straight from kick off rush into my 11 man defence, its useless, and you will lose the ball sooner or later. Passing is the best way to move upfield and perform an attacking move to grab a goal against your opponent, when passing have in your head where your going to pass the ball next, or where your going to knock the ball on etc.
One-Two Passing
One two passing is a great and effective way to move up the pitch without the opponent getting the ball from your players feet.
To perform a One-two pass hold L1 and press X on PS3 and LB and A on Xbox.
One-Two passing will be useful to increase the pace and pressure of your attack and your opponent will be forced into mistakes opening up goal chances for your team, you will play more faster and more precisely.
Attacking from the wing.
Attacking from the wing with a fast winger can be really effective if you have a tall player in the box, there are different ways to get the ball into the box, (look at the passing section).
For the best wingplay, put your cross settings on manual or semi, this will make your crosses more accurate, before crossing, actually check if someones in the box, or look at the positioning and the movement of the striker. Its easier to score when your striker is running into the cross it gives the shot/header more power and will most likely fire past the keeper.
Lob the Defence.
To lob the defence check out the passing section on how to do it and where and why. Lobbing the ball over the defences head is most useful with a fast striker to run onto the ball either before the keeper comes out and gets it, or the defence recover the ball and gain possession.
When performing a lobbed pass, make sure your playing your striker into space and not between two massive defenders who will easily when your striker to a header.
Other Tips
- A normal shot is for power
A Finesse shot is for accuracy
- Use the finesse shot to shoot into the far corner, (opposite side of the keeper)
- Use your space!
- Look at where the opponent is approaching you from think which direction you can turn to fool the defender and try and get a shot on goal....
- Do NOT one-two pass with your defense.
[multipage=Game Tactics]
D-PAD Tactics
The D-Pad offers a method of having the computer structure your team for you. This can be incredibly useful, although many ignore this. Setting your team up for the Posession Game when you need to run the clock out can make that small difference needed between you and your opponent
Custom Tactics
A feature that debuted in FIFA 09 was the ability to set your own Custom Tactics, and this feature returns in FIFA 12 for the third year in a row. These Custom Tactics are basically your teams "settings", so to speak. You can specify how quickly or intensely you want your team to defend, attack, posess, pressure, etc. to your liking. Remember that every tactic that is increased, there is a drawback of some sort, so find that perfect balance.

[multipage=Free-Kicks]
Dipping free kick.
The Dipping Free Kick is the most effective free kick method in FIFA 12, and this is simply because you will use it much more than the others. It should be taken from relatively close range and closer to the center of the box than not, don't use this if you're more than 30 yards out.
First, you need to select a kick taker that has high Curve and Free Kick Accuracy stats, you can see this by holding down the left trigger during the free kick screen. Power is not such a big deal when it comes to the dipping free kick, and in some cases, less power is better as it has more time to dip.
Next, Aim accordingly:
Right of the wall
Left foot: Aim between the 2nd and 3rd players
from the right of the wall.
Right foot: Aim just between the heads of the 1st and 2nd
players from the right of the wall.
Left of the wall
Left foot: Aim just between the heads of the 1st and 2nd
players from the left of the wall.
Right foot: Aim between the 2nd and 3rd players from the left of the wall.
Finally, charge the power bar up to about just before the yellow, or around the beginning of the yellow if it's closer to 25 yards. You're aiming for it to drop into the bottom corner, so it doesn't need a whole lot. See the picture below for how much you should usually charge up to.

Last, as you shoot the ball, hold up on the left analog stick to apply dip. Try to make it go straight up so you get some nice downward curl. If everything else is done correctly, this should be the easiest part and your shot will drop nicely out of reach of the keeper.
Driven Curled Free Kick (27-35 yards out)
When the kick is just a bit too far to try the dipping free kick, you can try to curl a hard shot around the wall with the Driven Curled Free Kick. You can only do this if the preferred foot of the player corresponds to the side of the goal that the wall is blocking. For example, Van Persie, a left footer, can do this well if the wall is blocking the left side of the goal, and the keeper is leaving it open. This way, he can just curl it around the wall, but it wouldn't work so well if he tried to curl it left around a wall blocking the right side of the goal.
So, aiming is pretty self explanatory. We're aiming to curl the ball around the wall, so aim just to the side of it.
As far as power goes, this depends greatly upon how far you are out. If you're nearing the 27 yard range, see the picture below for appropriate power. However, once you get past 30 yards or so, it becomes a lot harder to gauge how much power you'll need, so just try it out yourself and get the hang of it.

Last, you need to apply curve in whatever direction you're curving so that it makes it around the wall. If you think you put on a bit too much power, it can help to point the analog stick to the side AND down. It's tougher than the dipping free kick, but equally as effective and awesome to watch the ball fly in.
Driven Free Kick (35+ yards out)
Undoubtedly the toughest free kick to pull off, but definitely the most spectacular when done correctly. The Driven Free kick is for when you're way out and you still think you've got a shot at scoring. Everything is critical when you do this, aiming, power and how quickly you can apply the dip.
When selecting a kick taker, you probably shouldn't even try this one if you don't have a kick taker with a power level in the high 80s. Personally, I've ever only scored this with players who have above 90 power, which is quite rare.
As far as aiming goes, see the instructions for the dipping free kick, this is no different.
For power, it is nearly impossible to pinpoint because of all the different areas you can try this from. On average, I'd say you should be powering up to just before the orange zone. See the picture below for a graphical description.

Like the dipping free kick, you need to apply dip (push up on the analog stick) after powering up so that you get it to dip down into the goal. Don't forget this, as it's nearly impossible to score one of these with no dip.
[multipage=Penalty kicks]
Penalty Kicks provide a scoring chance with a very high rate of success. Of course, it is possible that the keeper will guess the right way and save your shot, but the chance that you will beat the keeper is much higher.
Initiating the Shot
When your player is lined up to take the penalty, you will notice the Accuracy Bar, with the indicator moving back and forth in the bottom left corner of your screen. Your goal is to press the shoot button just as the indicator reaches the very center of the bar in the greenest part. Although after this you control accuracy in an even further way, this also has a big effect on the accuracy of your shot. Also note that you can still miss the target even if you hit the exact center of the Accuracy Bar, it all dependends on the aiming that comes next. However, the closer your indicator is to the center of the bar, the more your shot will be helped.
Aiming
After you have placed he indicator on the Accuracy Bar, hold down the shoot button to determine power as you would for any other type of shot. This is where it gets tricky – as you let go of the shoot button, imagine a little crosshair aiming just at the center of the keepers chest. You can move this “crosshair” with the left analog stick. Aim to the side and a little up or down in order to hit the corners. I typically aim for the bottom corners as they are much easier to hit than the top corners and they still have what I would say is about an 80% success rate.

Stutter Step
To perform the stutter step penalty in which you stop your run-up to the ball halfway through to startle the keeper, press the shoot button for a second time as you are running up to the ball at the point you would like your penalty taker to stop at. Although this is quite effective in real life, keepers don't seem to be too phased by it in FIFA.
Placed Penalty
To execute a placed penalty, hold down RB on Xbox as you press the shoot button, and R1 for Playstation. The placed penalty supposedly has more accuracy than the regular driven one, and thus less a chance of missing the target. Other than this, follow the same principles as given for the regular penalty.
Chipped Penalty
There really isn't much use for the chipped penalty other than to be a bit cheeky. Only try to do this if you are quite sure that your opponent will make the keeper dive one way, as you will look stupid if you try it and it chips up right into the hands of the keeper. To execute a chipped penalty, hold down LB as you press the shoot button on Xbox, and L1 for Playstation.
[multipage=Corner kicks]
Corners are a bit of a mixed bag. There is no definite way to score them and it is sometimes a bit of luck. However, there are certain factors that you can control to increase the likelihood that one of your targets will get a head on your cross and score.
Choosing your Kick-Taker
Before you begin the game, I would recommend picking your kick taker in team management so you don't have to set it to your preferred kick taker every time you get a corner. Now, as to who you should choose to take your corner kicks; I recommend a player with decent power and passing. Most of the time, the default kick taker is already set for you but look at the stats of each player to determine who would work best. Another thing to take into account is that you don't want to pick a big tall guy as your corner taker, even if he's great at taking them because he would be more of a threat in the box.

Also note that a quick way to select your kick taker on corners is to hold down RT on Xbox or R2 on Playstation, which will bring down a menu of kick takers without you having to go to the pause menu to choose your kick taker.
Taking the Corner
The two things to remember when taking a corner are obviously direction and power. In terms of direction, you want to aim just in front of your tallest, strongest players, or the ones that tower over their markers to some degree. You want to give it quite a bit of power. Try to get the power bar in the area where it's around the yellowish-orange area.
Sometimes, you might want to try curling the corner kick. Only try this if your corner taker is right-footed and taking a right-sided corner, and vice versa so that your corner curls away from the keeper.
The Short Corner
A feature that returns again in FIFA 12 after debting in FIFA 09 is that a player is waiting to be called up to around where the corner is being taken so the corner taker can play a light pass to him. If you do this when your opponent is least expecting it, it can be very effective. A useful technique is to have this 2nd man run up, play it to him, and try to get as close as possible to the keeper's 6-yard box and pass in to someone to put it away. However, most of the time there will be defenders in your way and you might still have to either go for a low cross or something, or you could try to use a skill move to get around them. The inverted-rainbow move is very useful for this.
Defending the Corner
There really isn't much more you can do to defend the corner other than pressing the pass button to head the ball out of the box for a teammate to clear. Another thing you can try is to bring out your keeper to punch the ball away by holding Y on the Xbox and Triangle for Playstation, but I would only ever recommend this if the cross is quite near to the keeper because the opposing player might get his head on the ball before your keeper gets his fist to it.
Created Set Piece Corner
In FIFA 12, you have the ability to create your own set pieces to use in games, and this includes corner kicks. Get creative and surprise your opponent with a unique set play. You can do this via the Practice Arena.

Accomplishments
Your player will unlock new skills and traits which in turn affect his overall. Keep in mind that it is impossible for your player to reach 99 Overall, the max is around 90. By viewing your Accomplishments, you can see which ones you still need to achieve and how to do so, and which ones you have already gotten. Keep in mind that FIFA 12 does not have any secret achievements, and all are viewable from the Accomplishment Book.
Game Face
One of the most unique aspects of Virtual Pro, or FIFA 12 in general is Game Face, which allows you to download an image of your own face to be used for your Virtual Pro! You can do this online via EA Sports' website.
