lw/rw i think plays the mid/def area where as lf/rf play upfront

The position/formation determines how wide the player will play in game. Any LW/RW will be spread out on their respected wings, as opposed to LF/RF which play closer in to the middle of the field (more narrow). LW/RW are usually key for crossing, or obviously bringing the play out wide.
