YOUR ANSWERS:
Title: The Crucible

Author: Arthur Miller

Who is the Protagonist? Abigail Williams

Who is the Antagonist? John Proctor

Where is the setting? Salem, a small town in colonial Massachusetts

What kind of conflicts is present? Lies, vengeance, blackmail, traitors

Paraphrase (rewrite) the events in Exposition-The audience finds out that the girls have been practicing witchcraft in the forest with Tituba. The initial incident is the actual accusing of the women of witchcraft by the several girls that were in the forest. This gets the plot rolling, and everything rolls downhill from their with the townspeople reaching a complete frenzy.

Paraphrase events in Rising Action- personal prejudices and accusations replace seemingly harmless suspicions and questionings. As the action rises, reason is increasingly replaced by hysteria, as those who are weak, misled, or simply evil fuel the fear of witchcraft, while the good, strong, and innocent become victims. The rising action also moves the focus onto the central character of the play, John Proctor, who has the power to take action, but is prevented from doing so by his guilt over committing adultery and fear of exposure as a sinner.

Paraphrase events in Climax-when the court finds John Proctor guilty after he admits that he had been intimate with Abigail Williams. According to the second definition, the climax occurs when John Proctor decides it is more important to tell the truth than to save his life with a lie. So he tears up his false confession to witchcraft and gives himself over for hanging.

Paraphrase events in Conclusion -actual execution where John Proctor upholds his innocence and goes to the gallows.

Explain how main conflict is or is not resolved- Many are killed but after many show that they are not ‘guilty’ the judges come to a conclusion as they are ‘touched on a personal level’ so to speak.

Explain the theme- Most of the characters in The Crucible are lying – if not to other people, then to themselves. Abigail lies about her ability to see spirits, as do the other girls; Proctor is deceitful first for cheating on his wife and then for hiding it; and the judge and lieutenant governor and ministers lie to themselves and everybody else in saying that they serve the cause of God’s justice. The twist in the story is that by telling the truth (“I am not a witch”Winky Winky, you die, but you also gain your freedom – that is, you retain your standing with God, and you become a martyr.

Explain how you were or were not able to relate to any characters- You can do this. You can’t relate because they are witches… figure something out.
explain why you would or would not recommend this book- I would not recommend this book. It was a good read, and was written well but I have a short attention span and the events were not intense enough for me. It was played out a little too slowly.

You are in luck. I recently read a book/play and had a paper saved... I have it all written out for you.
