(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); I've always found it interesting that getting people to try an online game and getting them to keep playing are two completely different challenges. A new release can attract plenty of attention at launch, but maintaining an active player base months later seems to require a completely different approach.

Updates and new content obviously matter, but I think there is also something to be said for understanding the different stages of a player's experience. Someone discovering a game for the first time has very different expectations from someone who has been playing for six months. Good communication, community events, progression, and timely updates can all give players a reason to stay involved.

I've recently come across the term You must login or register to view this content. in this context, and I think it's an interesting way of looking at player engagement beyond simply trying to attract as many new users as possible.

What games do you think have done the best job of keeping players interested over the long term?
