The story:
Perhaps Conan O'Brien's favorite thing to do when he has some time off is to stop shaving. The 46-year-old former "Tonight Show" host was spotted last weekend on a family vacation in Hawaii, sporting the same bearded look he wore during the writer's strike from late 2007 to early 2008. (He joked about his facial hair on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" when he returned to the air after the strike ended, calling it the first beard of his life.)
Courtesy Entertainment Weekly Conan's latest pursuit into hirsutism doesn't look as groomed as the one he debuted during the TV and movie-writers strike, but hey, the guy just lost his job.
Beards have a storied history among public personalities. Baseball and hockey players are known to grow beards out of superstition during their final events (e.g., the Stanley Cup playoffs or World Series).
O'Brien is still rumored to be in talks with Fox about the possibility of hosting a new late-night show with the network or its sister channel, FX. Meanwhile, a USA Today story theorizes that Jay Leno's March 1 takeover of the "Tonight Show" will be more "restrained". Media experts quoted in the article say the revamped show faces the challenge of overcoming the damage done to Leno's nice-guy reputation during the Leno versus Conan "Late night wars."
The question remains: Will the Leno who appears on the new version of "The Tonight Show" be clean-shaven or bearded? We'll see. Given the traditions of other famous contenders, Leno's face could be a signal of how superstitious the host is about his success.
