Learn the basics first; i.e forehands, backhands, volleys, serves until you can regularly get the ball back to where you want. The grips for each shot are also important as you will probably learn. The semi-western should be used for forehands. One way to get a good semi-western is to put your racket on the floor and just pick it up flat.
Backhands and volleys should be played with chopper grip, basically imagine your racket as a knife and hold it as if your chopping something (duh?).
Finally the most important spin you should be able to play is top spin (around 75% of shots) this is basically brushing up over the ball and helps you keep the ball in the court.
Well pretty much have fun, listen to your coach and practice and you should improve pretty fast.
Good tips, don't you think spin a little advanced for someone who had never played before though?
