Many different things you have to take into account.
The big thing is which system are your friends playing.
And sense I now much more about ps3 Ill just post stuff about ps3 and let someone with xbox post things about xbox.
ps3
-If you watch/ buy movies a lot then you should really think about ps3
-If you have patience
-Can play thousands and thousands of ps2 and ps1 games (as long as you get 80gb)
-If you have a psp then the ps3 will greatly benefit it.
-The online isn't amazing, but its free and it does what its suppose to.
Those are just a couple things, not talking about games and stuff like that. Because both consoles have just about equal amounts of games coming out. Its all about preference.

PS3 has more announced GOOD games coming out like twice as much as Xbox 360.
Like 7 good games announced for Xbox 360 and like 14 for PS3.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will keep you busy because its maxes the PS3's 50GB blu-ray disc storage
Developers MAY switch to PS3 mainly because of its disc storage

HD DVDs gone, so there is only Blu-Ray which can be played by PS3.
I don't got an Xbox 360, so I don't know much about it.

i personally like 360 better , cause , i think it has better online
some of the games that have come out for it so far are really good , and ps3 , i havn't heard much about it , only like haze and stuff
both ps3 and 360 play movies , but ps3 is a blue ray player which is a good deal cause blue ray players are really expensive, they cost like 2 times as much as a ps3 , but x box 360 plays regular discs so you wont have h d , but you do get to use a lot of you old discs
also , both ps3 and 360 consoles can play old games, like from the original x box , or ps2 or p sone , but the x box 360 enhances the quality of the old games, which i really like
